All sound waves are caused by molecules vibrating.

Many parts of the ear work together to make hearing possible. The ear has three main parts: the outer ear (the part you can see), the middle ear, and the inner ear. Each of these parts have parts of their own. The outer ear collects sound waves (like a funnel) and sends them down the ear canal, a tube that takes sound to the middle ear. When the sound waves reach the middle ear, they hit the eardrum. The eardrum is made of very thin material. When sound hits that material, it vibrates (just like the head of a drum does when you hit it with a stick). The vibrations in the eardrum makes three very tiny bones behind the eardrum—called the malleus, the incus, and the stapes—to also vibrate. As sound energy travels from the outer ear down the ear canal to the middle ear, the vibrations become weaker, the vibrating of the bones behind the eardrum amplifies the sound waves so they can travel to the inner ear.
